Spend enough time in any given place, and themes begin to emerge. Attending college in rural Iowa, those themes became apparent to me through the beauty of the landscape. Iowa is a serene environment, but one shaped by extremes. Its hills were carved millions of years ago by glacial movement, and its lush prairies are the result of battering rain, strong winds, and brush fires.

With these three images in mind, I created "Ode to Iowa", a multimedia installation at the Grinnell Area Arts Council. Three books of Iowa laws were shaped by the elements they represent -- soaked, burned, or cut and shredded by gusts -- and fitted with pictures of the natural world.
