Strategic Leader for Social Change
As a child, I was fortunate to have access to a black and white camera. While color photography is an invaluable tool, shooting in black and white forces the photographer to hone in on details color often glosses over: texture, shadow, weight, depth. Whereas color brings the observer closer to reality, black and white is almost otherworldly, an alternate universe absent of familiar shades and hues.
During my time at the Grin City Collective, an artists’ residency in rural Iowa, I further explored the eerie beauty of black and white. Surrounded by solemn farmhouses and silos, I created the Farm Series, a set of digital pictures in reverence of these stunning structures. In tandem with the colorless palate, the mirrored effect casts the viewer further afield from reality, while the imagery itself contrasts this with a grounded, familiar environment.
